The LED Revolution, Lighting the Future of India

Light Emitting Diodes or LED marks the most significant progress of electronics in this millennium. They were conceived as replacement of incandescent or luminous lamps. LED lamps, however, contain two lead semiconductors which emit lights when activated. They lit up immediately after the switch is on and do not take warm-up time. Besides, LED lamps offer a plethora of benefits. They save energy and are economical. Besides, they are not threatening the environment as other lamps. Hence, LED lamps are, therefore, known to be environment friendly. Apart from lamps, LED is widely used in televisions, watches, calculators and radios.

However, the benefits of LED lamps are many. They generate less heat and take less time to cool down. They produce more light than the luminous and incandescent bulbs, but consume less energy. LED lamps emit less carbon into the environment, so they are very much eco-friendly. Moreover, LED lamps are cheap and require less maintenance costs.

LED Lighting India

India has already embraced LED lamps to lighten up rural and urban areas. The Government of India took up a mission to reach LED lights in every household in 2014. The project is named UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All). Since, the LED lamps are cheap and long-lasting; they are affordable for poor people. They do not contain mercury and require less energy to generate light. Within a short while of implementation, the UJALA project started reaping its benefits. Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) has been endowed with the task of implementing UJALA project for LED Lighting India. The households, streets, markets, offices, malls are illumined with LED lights.

EESL has started purchasing LED lamps through bidding. As a result, the prices of the LED lamps lights have started reducing. Earlier, LED light bulb prices in India was Rs.310/ per piece. Now, it has come down to an average Rs. 70/ per piece. The reduced price has made it affordable to everyone. As a result, every evening the households are getting illumined with LED bulbs. The demands of LED bulbs have increased substantially. This has also contributed to the expansion of the industry of LED Lighting India. More companies are now engaged in producing LED lamps to meet the growing demands of these lamps. The economy of the country is getting benefitted by the UJALA project indeed.

Since, the LED Lamps consume less power, the householders pay less for these lights. Their monthly electricity bills reflect a stark change compared to their previous bills. Hence, the LED light bulb prices are not only cheap; they also incur less monthly expenditure.

Nowadays, all the streets and roads of Indian States and Union Territories are illumined with LED lights. These lights are reaping maximum benefits for the people as well as for the governments. The roads look brighter and more beautiful than before. There is no corner on the streets, roads and alleys that remain dark in the evening. The LED lamps shine so brightly, that the surroundings look bright and beautiful. Moreover, they emit less carbon to the environment. So, these lights in a way are curbing the pollution of the environment. They have also reduced the power consumption as well as the expenditure of the government. In a country like India, where power consumption level is very high, an LED lamp is a blessing.  As the LED lamps have a larger life span, the governments need not worry about replacing them frequently. Once installed, they will go on functioning for long.

LED lamps and bulbs are the future of the electric medium of the country. The more people will embrace LED lights; more benefits will be reaped by the people and the country.
